FPPD captures suspect who used electric shock weapon in convenience store robbery

Fort Pierce police officers and detectives captured a man Thursday afternoon after he robbed a convenience store by attacking the clerk with an electric baton.

Officers were called to the Citgo gas station and store at 4101 Okeechobee Road around 10:20 a.m. The clerk there said he had just been attacked by a man with an electric weapon. He said the man who jumped over the counter and stole money from the cash register. The clerk fought with the suspect throughout the incident despite being shocked, punched and kicked.

The suspect fled, but officers and detectives quickly began searching with the assistance of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office helicopter and a Sheriff’s Office police dog.

A Fort Pierce patrol officer spotted the suspect hiding in an abandoned house in the 2300 block of South 29th Street. The suspect matched the description and was positively identified by the robbery victim. A large sum of money was in the suspect’s back pocket when officers found him, and the electric weapon was found at the scene of the robbery.

The suspect was identified as Middleton Henderson, 21, of the 3800 block of Edwards Road. In discussing the robbery with detectives, Henderson said, “it didn’t go according to plan, the clerk fought back.”

Henderson was charged with Armed Robbery and Aggravated Battery. He was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail.
