Five-year-old boy found unconscious, at the bottom of swimming pool west of Fort Pierce,  efforts to revive child on scene and at hospital were unsuccessful, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Mascara

A five-year-old boy wandered away from a church playground next to his West Midway Road home west of Fort Pierce late Friday afternoon.

The child, Adam Elusma, of 3040 West Midway Road, found his way to a home less than two-tenths of a mile away on Jorgensen Road and was found unconscious at the bottom of the home’s swimming pool, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

A St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Deputy and Fort Pierce Police officer, part of a joint summer task force, were dispatched to the home along with St. Lucie County Fire Rescue. The officer and deputy arrived first, jumped into the pool, brought the child out and began CPR until the ambulance arrived. The child was in about three feet of water in the shallow end of the pool.

Paramedics continued efforts to revive the child. They took him by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute, where all attempts to resuscitate the child were unsuccessful.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital’s emergency room at around 5:45 p.m.

“We extend our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Adam Elusma,” Sheriff Mascara said.
