Corrections officer arrested

Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrested James Yearby of  Palm City on a charge of introduction of contraband into a state correctional facility.

A Martin County corrections officer is accused of smuggling contraband into a state correctional facility for cash.

James Yearby, of Palm City, had been under investigation since last August.

Yearby works as a corrections officer at Martin County Correctional Institution in Indiantown.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said someone heard Yearby talk about the possibility of providing cell phones for cash. Investigators said Yearby offered two cell phones for $1,500 to a confidential source. The FDLE says that Yearby received the cash for the phones the next day.

The confidential source found the two cell phones hidden under his pillow.  According to the report, Months later, investigators said Yearby offered to make another transaction.

This was for cellular minute cards for $5,000. Yearby was arrested on two counts of introduction of contraband into a state correctional facility. Both are third degree felonies. Yearby is being held at the Martin County Jail on a $15,000 bond.

The Office of the State Attorney, 19tth Circuit, will prosecute.
