“Notorious Ashley Gang” The Making of a Legend
This permanent exhibit will explore the life and times of John Ashley and his family. Born in the 1880’s and raised in the wild west atmosphere that prevailed over Florida’s East Coast and the Everglades. John Ashley turned to a life of crime after he was accused and tried numerous times for the murder of Seminole Indian De Sotto Tiger in 1911.
John Ashley (AKA the Swamp Bandit) was a prolific Floridian bank robber, bootlegger, and pirate. Between 1915-1924, he and his gang were responsible for robbing almost $1 million dollars. Learn more by seeing the exhibit yourself at the Elliott Museum.
