Interested in learning how to make jewelry and don’t know where to start?
Welcome to the 46th Annual Handcrafted Jewelry, Rock, and Gem Show at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center on Saturday, October 21, 9 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, October 22, 10 am to 4 pm. Admission to the show is $5.00, with children free when accompanied by an adult. The show is sponsored by the St. Lucie County Rock and Gem Club to continue to provide the community with classes and exposure to the lapidary arts and the science of rocks and minerals.
Artisans and vendors from many parts of the country will be selling a variety of offerings, including handcrafted jewelry created from beads, rocks, silver, copper, and more; slabs and cabochons of exotic rocks; faceted gemstones from around the globe; and much more. Club members will be demonstrating their techniques and skills with bead weaving, faceting, cabochons, wire wrapping and weaving, and chain maille. Raffles will feature custom-made by club artisans and mineral specimens, and the Treasure Table will include numerous unique items donated by club members including jewelry, beads, stones, books, and equipment. Children are always welcome at a special area where they can learn about gemstone identification and make their own jewelry.
The St. Lucie County Rock and Gem Club was founded in 1975 when a group of rockhounds organized and began offering classes to share their knowledge of the lapidary arts and the science of rocks and minerals. Without the Internet, news of the club spread simply by word of mouth. A surprising number of residents in Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River Counties were looking to find others who shared their passion. Now the club is proud to have over 120 active members from throughout the region.
With no start-up funds but full of big dreams, the original members saved enough money to purchase their own workshop building and equipment. Classes are now taught in any area of interest that reflects the wants and needs of the membership in the club’s fully-equipped workshop. These educational opportunities are offered throughout the yearend are taught by a skilled volunteer who is a club member. Classes are held in multi-week increments, with additional “pop-up” classes available as demand occurs. Workshop sessions are also available to experienced members to work independently on their own projects.
Everyone is welcome to attend the monthly general meeting held on the fourth Sunday of the month at the La Buona Vita Clubhouse (8601 S. Federal Highway).
