Dunkin’ Donuts Provides $5K to Local Backpack Program

Dunkin’ Donuts Provides $5K to Local Backpack Program.

In Brevard County the number of children in the free and reduced-price meal program exceeds 50%. Some elementary schools have 80% or more of their kids on the free and reduced-price meal program. Many of these children are  at risk of childhood hunger and malnutrition.

For this reason, The Children’s Hunger Project helps as many elementary school children as possible to carry food home for the weekend in their backpack. This ensures the students have food packed for the weekend. Then the students can come back on Monday feeling energized and ready to learn.

On average, it costs $150 per student to provide healthy meals for the entire school year. In order to serve as many children as possible, Dunkin’ Donuts’ Joy in Childhood Foundation donated $5,000 to The Children’s Hunger Project. Through this donation, The Children’s hunger Project is able to serve 33 additional students this year, on top of all the students currently enrolled in the program.
