DUI crash leaves one woman dead and child in serious condition

Okeechobee, Fl (treasurecoast.com)- A DUI crash on Saturday left one woman dead and a child in serious condition in the hospital.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a 74-year-old woman has died and a 4-year-old girl is in serious condition after a truck ran a stop sign and collided with their vehicle.

Vehicle 1 was a 64 year old male from Okeechobee.  He had no injuries. Vehicle 2 was a 74 year old female from Okeechobee who succumbed from fatal injuries.  With her was a 4 yo female who also was from Okeechobee.

Report from FHP:

Vehicle 1 (V-1) was traveling north on SW 48th Avenue. Vehicle 2 (V-2) was traveling east on State Road 70, approaching the intersection with SW 48th Avenue. V-1 failed to yield the right of way from the stop sign at State Road 70 and attempted a left turn to travel west on State Road 70. The driver of V-2 (D-2) was unable to avoid V-1 causing the front of V-2 to collide with the left side of V-1. V-1 continued to travel north and drove off the roadway to its final rest on the north shoulder of State Road 70, facing north. V-2 spun counter-clockwise, after impact with V- 1, and came to its final rest partially blocking both the east and westbound lanes of State Road 70, facing north. D-2 was pronounced deceased at Raulerson Hospital. Passenger of V-2 was flown by Air Rescue to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

The driver of V-1 (D-1) sustained no known injuries and was arrested on scene for DUI manslaughter, DUI serious bodily injury, and DUI property damage. D-1 was booked into the Okeechobee County Jail.

This case is pending investigation.
