Drive Safely this Memorial Day!

Treasurecoast.com- The Memorial Day holiday marks the start of the “100 deadliest days of summer” driving season. According to AAA, teen-driver involved crashes kill 10 people a day during these 100 days until Labor Day weekend.

A recent study also shows 90% of Americans say there are more distractions on the road now than there were five years ago.

The National Safety Council is predicting about 380 people to die across the U.S. in crashes this weekend alone. The NSC estimates an additional 43,300 people may be seriously injured on the roads over the long weekend. Police stress that you use ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft. If you plan on drinking take advantage of apps or settings on your smartphones that block notifications and calls coming to you while driving. The Click It Or Ticket campaign is also happening throughout the month of May until June 2, so don’t forget to buckle up.

Martin County has had 9 crashes involving fatalities, so far in 2019; 3 of those deaths were attributed to vehicle occupants not wearing a seat belt. During this campaign, Martin County Sheriff’s Deputies will be taking a “no-excuses” approach to seat belt enforcement. Whether you’re on a back country road or the interstate, in a minivan or an SUV, whether you’re traveling cross country or just across the street, buckle your seat belt every trip, every time. And ensure that each and every passenger – child and adult – is properly restrained, too. Doing so could save a life.
