Dog food donation to animal shelters being distributed in Palm City

Palm City, Fl (treasurecoast.com) A local animal shelter is distributing $500,000 worth of dog food — about one million meals — to feed dogs across the state.

Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch, a nonprofit animal shelter in Palm City, initially received the large donation from dog food company Stella and Chewy’s, which aimed to donate 500,000 pounds of dog food to shelters around the nation this year.

Furry Friends, which is partnered with Stella and Chewy’s, offered to help distribute a portion of that food.

“We have a 27-acre ranch in Palm City, so we had the base and the means to take a large portion of that 500,000 with the hopes of sharing it with all of the shelters in Florida,” said Curry Krasulak, director of development and programs.

Furry Friends received 100,000 pounds of food, and since Monday, shelters from Miami to Georgia have been sending trucks to Palm City to pick up pallets of the food. The pallets are so heavy they have to be moved around using tractors.

Furry Friends still has food left to share.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been especially hard on animal shelters, Krasulak said. Shelters are receiving fewer donations, and with evictions on the rise, they sometimes need to take care of more animals.

Over 40 shelters and state agencies, including Port St. Lucie Animal Control, the Humane Society of Broward and the Redland Dog Sanctuary, have come to Palm City to take food according to their needs.

Furry Friends even sent a couple pallets, or 1-2 tons of food, to Kentucky to aid tornado victims who need to feed their pets.

For some local shelters, the additional dog food will be a tremendous help.

Redland Dog Sanctuary, a recently opened nonprofit that aims to rehabilitate dogs in Miami-Dade County’s Redlands area, took two pallets.

The sanctuary currently cares for 86 dogs, and the 3,000 pounds of food it received likely will feed their dogs for about two months, according to their director.

Furry Friends encouraged any animal shelters in need of dog food to call 561-277-3701.
