Disney donates, sells masks to help needy

Walt Disney called his Disneyland park the “happiest place on earth,” and now Disneyland and Disney World, though closed temporarily due to the coronavirus pandemic, have a reason to feel happy with the launch of a line of whimsical protective face masks that sport Disney’s beloved characters. The company will donate a million of the masks to vulnerable and underserved communities and will also donate up to $1 million from the profits on the sales of the face masks through Sept. 30. at shopDisney.com.

The masks, sold at shopDisney.com are made from reusable cloth and they come in more than a dozen designs. They may be pre-ordered for delivery in June and they come in packages of four masks, each different. One of the packages is themed to Mickey and Minnie; another one, to Disney’s ever popular princesses including “Frozen.” Other themes include Toy Story, Star Wars and Marvel. A specially whimsical package has masks decorated with the mouths of such lovable characters as Winnie the Pooh.

So all ages can wear them, the masks come in three sizes: small, médium and large –that way all Disney fans –young and young-at-heart—can sport them. Cost of a package with four masks is $19.95, and they will be available from June 15 on –those who pre-order them will receive an email letting them know they are ready to ship. According to Disney the masks conform to the guidelines of the Food & Drug Administration regarding face masks for non-medical or non-industrial use. Up to $1 million in profits from the sale through Sept. 30 will be donated to the charity MedShare.

“We realize this is a challenging time for families and wearing any type of mask can be daunting,” said Edward Park, senior vice president, Disney Store and shopDisney, in a blog. “Our hope is that Disney’s cloth face masks featuring some of our most beloved characters will provide comfort to the families, fans and communities that are so important to us.”

And it will be comforting to Disney fans to know during the unprecedented times we are living in, that when they put on one of these face masks they are helping others. There is still no official re-opening date for Walt Disney World, but when the park opens again I for one will be going for some fun and magic –wearing my Mickey and Minnie face mask!
