Delivery of 96-gallon garbage cart begins in August,                              smaller cart option now available

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – In preparation for September’s new automated garbage collection, the City plans to deliver a 96-gallon cart to all households in August, unless a resident requests a smaller 64-gallon cart by June 10, 2022.

A form to request the 64-gallon cart is now available on the City’s website at www.CityofPSL.com/solidwaste. Residents also may submit a request by calling 1PSL at 772-871-1775. To help forecast cart inventory, the City is asking residents to make their smaller cart requests before June 10, 2022. If a resident prefers the 96-gallon cart, no action is required. All solid waste residential customers will receive a postcard in the next few days, by mail, notifying them of the new solid waste service coming in September and the details about the garbage carts.

To achieve a cost-effective rate for new solid waste service, the City’s Solid Waste Task Force, an advisory group of City residents with members that had solid waste experience, recommended once-a-week pickup. Once-a-week pickup is utilized by many Florida cities including, Stuart, Orlando, Jacksonville, Lakeland, Tallahassee, Cape Coral and Gainesville, among several others.

The new 96-gallon carts hold up to seven, 13-gallon garbage bags which provides a similar capacity to what most households use for the current twice-per-week service. The durable 96-gallon cart holds three times as much as a typical trash can. With the new service, all trash must fit into the cart (and the lid should be closed) to be collected by the automated trucks.

With a similar design to the current green recycling carts, these black carts have a wide-grip handle, two large wheels and a cart lid to keep water out and odors in. The cart also keeps garbage secure from animals and weather, decreases street litter and makes garbage collection safer and more efficient.

The 96-gallon and 64-gallon carts are now on display at City Hall, 121 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd., and St. Lucie West Services District, 450 SW Utility Drive, Port St. Lucie, during regular business hours for residents who would like to see them in person.

If a resident lives in an HOA and they regulate the placement and size of garbage carts, residents are asked to please reach out to their HOA to confirm the size of the cart the HOA will require for their neighborhood.
