Covid-19 Update: Elderly, PPE and Martin County Schools

Florida is coming off one of its deadliest days since the coronavirus pandemic began. 245 fatalities were reported yesterday, and the death toll now tops 74-hundred. There were more than 54-hundred new cases. 

Governor DeSantis is looking for ways to let family members reunite with loved ones who have been isolated in nursing homes to protect them from the coronavirus.

During a roundtable in Jacksonville, Governor DeSantis and the first lady heard from advocates who say the ongoing family separation causes deep psychological harm. The governor says he’s still reviewing the proposal with state health experts. 

 

Thousands of nurses are holding a national day of action today outside hospitals in Florida and across the country. They’re calling attention to what’s going on on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19- including a lack of PPE.

Marissa Lee–a nurse at Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee–says they also want Congress to extend unemployment benefits and daycare subsidies through the end of the year for families she says are on the brink. 

Florida’s largest teachers union is asking a judge for a temporary injunction to delay the start of school. The Florida Education Association already filed a lawsuit asking to delay the first day of K-through-12 schools.

Tuesday night’s meeting in Martin County between teachers and the district was tense. The negotiations were just one week before the start of school.
