City of Port St. Lucie Tropical Storm Nicole Advisory #3

City of Port St. Lucie Tropical Storm Nicole Advisory #3

PORT ST. LUCIE – In preparation and response to Tropical Storm Nicole, the Port St. Lucie City Council declared a local state of emergency Wednesday, Nov. 9. The declaration provides the City with more flexibility regarding expenditures and allocating resources, which may be necessary for localized street flooding, and the potential for wind damage caused by strong wind gusts and tornadoes.
Stay informed: For up-to-the-minute updates, please check the City’s dedicated website www.CityofPSL.com/Nicole. This site includes updates on closures, information about drainage and utilities, trash collection, City events and more. Residents are also encouraged to follow the City’s social media sites, including Facebook @CityofPSL, Twitter @CityPortStLucie and NextDoor page, as information changes quickly. Residents can also sign up to receive text messages or emails from the City.
Prior to the arrival of this storm, it is important to heed the warnings of local and state public officials; staying informed and understanding the situation can make a difference to you and your family’s safety! A good source to monitor is the National Hurricane Center’s webpage at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Below are important points of information the City would like residents to keep in mind:
Swales – Help keep the water flowing.
It is normal for water to be in the swale area, especially during the rainy season (May-November). Please allow seven days without further rainfall for the water to recede before submitting a request for service. Learn more at https://youtu.be/nR-2SRBCGjY
Did you know that a properly maintained swale will help prevent stormwater flooding? Residents can help by removing sediment and debris from the liner and removing obstructions that could block stormwater flow such as basketballs, kids’ toys and furniture. Remember, dumping grass clippings and other vegetative debris into the drainage system causes blockages which may result in localized flooding.
Water & sewer
Please be sure to conserve water during this time. No power outages have been reported, however, if you experience a loss in power, be patient as your power may return quickly and your sewer system will still function as normal. Should you lose power for an extended period of time, please continue to conserve water and call Connection Support at 772-873-6400 to report the outage.
Please be aware that Utility Systems staff will not be dispatched to respond to calls for service if wind speeds exceed 39 miles per hour. The safety of our staff is the number one priority, and employees will return to the field once it is safe to do so.

Police
The Port St. Lucie Police Department has activated its Hurricane Operations Plan. Officers will continue to provide City wide protection, security, traffic control, and other law enforcement services to ensure a safe environment during Tropical Storm Nicole. Please remember to call 911 if you need a police officer, however, as the weather deteriorates, the Police Department will prioritize calls and some minor calls for service may not warrant a response if it is determined to be too dangerous to respond.
Residents are asked to be careful driving in rain or wet conditions and to turn your car around if you encounter flooded streets before, during, and after storms.
Closures
Nothing new to report. For all closures in the City of Port St. Lucie visit www.CityofPSL.com/Nicole.
Waste Collection/Code Enforcement:
Due to anticipated weather issues, solid waste services will be impacted:
·        Garbage will be collected Wednesday, Nov. 9 for Wednesday customers. Recycling and yard waste will not be collected. This will allow FCC Environmental Services to concentrate all resources on collecting household garbage before the storm.
·        All solid waste services will be suspended Thursday, Nov. 10.
·        Thursday’s customers: FCC will collect garbage, recycling and yard waste Friday, Nov. 11.
·        Friday’s customers: FCC will collect garbage, recycling and yard waste Saturday, Nov. 12.
·        The Voluntary Drop-Off Site, on the corner of Cameo Boulevard and Crosstown Parkway, will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 9 through Friday, Nov. 11. The site will reopen Saturday, Nov. 12 and will continue to be available for residential yard and bulk waste seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or dusk).
Residents are being asked not to trim trees or put out large piles of yard waste as they might not be collected before the storm. Residents also should avoid placing out large piles of trash or bulky items until the storm passes. If a resident has a pile at the curb, and it’s not picked up before the storm, they are to asked to secured it.
