CDC issues alert for pet safety related to algae blooms

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued an animal safety alert related to algae blooms. This is according to the Martin County EOC which posted a message on its website. The warning advises people to not let their pets or livestock graze near, drink, or swim, in water that contains a cyanobacteria algae bloom. If your animal comes in contact with the water, wash them with clean water.

Call your vet if your pet exhibits any of the following warning signs: loss of energy, loss of appetite, vomiting, stumbling, falling, foaming at the mouth, diarrhea, convulsions, excessive drooling, tremors, seizures, or any unexplained sickness that occurs within a day or so after coming into contact with the water.

A robocall went out to Martin County reverse 911 subscribers. Seven Martin County dogs who live on or near the water have gotten sick recently and one of them died.
