A bridge tender could soon be hired to work the FEC Railway Bridge. The US Coast Guard announced that they are considering the move after Martin County government voiced concerns over the antiquated bridge and the imminent increase in rail traffic as a result of All Aboard Florida. Many on the Treasure Coast fear that the old bridge, built in 1938, will be forced to be closed more often than not once All Aboard Florida begins.

The county provided data to the Coast Guard showing that nearly 100,000 boats passed under the bridge in a 15-month period, and nearly all of them cannot pass under the bridge when it is closed. In addition to the bridge tender, the Coast Guard is also considering Martin County’s request that the bridge remain open a minimum of 30 minutes every hour.
