BREVARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE MARITIME SECURITY OFFICERS AND UNITED STATES COAST GUARD MEMBERS SAVE DISTRESSED LOGGERHEAD TURTLE

This past week, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Maritime Security Officer Anthony “Tony” Jicha was conducting a security check of the Canaveral Port Authority north cargo area. During his security check, which includes looking for any signs of unusual activity, MSO Jicha spotted a large Loggerhead Sea Turtle on a sandy area adjacent to a cargo pier. MSO Jicha quickly recognized the Loggerhead was in distress, and needed assistance.

The Sea Turtle Preservation Society was immediately notified however while waiting for their arrival, MSO Jicha solicited the help of fellow MSO’s and United States Coast Guard personnel to help keep the Loggerhead cool and moist. MSO Jicha provided shade and organized a small bucket brigade providing cooling seawater that was gently poured over the Loggerhead.

Upon arrival of the Sea Turtle Preservation Society team, MSO Jicha organized the contingent of volunteers to delicately place the Loggerhead on a sling. The Loggerhead was then hoisted over a seawall to the awaiting Sea Turtle Preservation Society vehicle that subsequently delivered the Loggerhead to Sea World where it is currently receiving care.
