Body Discovered in Burned Car on South Hutchinson Island.

St Lucie County (Treasurecoast.com)- Thursday morning at approximately 12:47 a.m. deputies and fire rescue personnel were called to the area of Blind Creek beach access (5400 block of South Ocean Drive) on South Hutchinson Island for reports of a brush fire.

“When first responders arrived, they found that it was not a brush fire, but in fact a car, fully engulfed in flames,” said Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

Detectives and the State Fire Marshal were called in to conduct an investigation. They were looking into into what kind of car, where it came from and why it might have been burned.

“While conducting their investigation, detectives discovered a body in the back of the car, both the car and body were burned beyond visible recognition,” Mascara said. “The 19th Judicial Circuit Medical Examiner was called to the scene and will rely on dental records to help identify the victim.”

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are at this time treating this as a homicide until evidence proves otherwise,” Mascara said. “If anyone along Seaway Drive or South Ocean Drive has any information they would like to share with detectives, they are asked to call (772) 462-3230 or you can call Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-8477.”

An autopsy was conducted today but the results of dental analysis will not be completed until next week. No further information will be released until positive identification of the victim has been determined.
