Bird Island to Receive Improvements

Bird Island to Receive Improvements

The Town has been notified that, starting today, Bird Island will be receiving improvements which will create a strengthened living shoreline to protect the island. This addition of rip-rap and mangrove plantings will upgrade the shoreline and assist with erosion issues. The work is a collaborative effort between the Florida Wildlife Commission (FWC) and Martin County.

Bird Island is a Critical Wildlife Area (CWA). FWC will work to reduce the disturbance and impacts, if any, on the birds and their nesting areas.

Construction efforts are planned to occur through the end of December.

As a reminder, Bird Island is off limits to the public. The contractors on and around the island during this time will be permitted through Martin County.
