Be aware of IRS impersonation scam.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports today in reference to taxpayers receiving unsolicited threatening phone calls from individuals impersonating Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees. These individuals use the threat of arrest to obtain money by falsely representing that the victims owe back taxes. The perpetrators of this scam demand the victims send them money. it could be via money order, prepaid debit cards, iTunes cards, or wire transfers from their bank. This is a nationwide scam that is now reaching victims in Brevard County.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), any person receiving this type of call should:

Hang up! Do not engage these callers. If you owe, or think you may owe taxes, hang up and call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
If you do not owe taxes, fill out the “IRS Impersonation scam” form at www.tigta.gov, or call TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
