Armed homeowner confronts would-be burglars in Port St. Lucie.

On February 8, 2017 at around 10:45 am, Port St. Lucie Police went to the 2600 block of SW Abel Street for reports of a burglary attempt report. The victim told police that he was inside his home when a silver minivan occupied with 4 suspects wearing fluorescent traffic vests pulled into his driveway. One of the suspects exited the van, went to the front door, then rang the door bell. The victim told police that he did not recognize the suspects and he was not expecting anyone to come to his house, so he went into his bedroom and retrieved his handgun.

The victim told police that when he returned to the front door he noticed that the suspect whom had rang his doorbell had walked around to the side of his house carrying a screwdriver. The victim went outside and confronted the suspect asking him what he was doing? The suspect immediately ran back toward the van tripping and falling in the process. The suspect lost his hat and screwdriver before getting into the van.

Once the suspect was inside the van, the vehicle quickly backed out of the driveway, smashing into a neighbor’s mailbox, located on SW Babcock Avenue. The impact with the mailbox knocked the rear passenger sliding van door off of the vehicle. The van fled the scene leaving the door behind.

Several police units responded to the area but were unable to locate the suspect vehicle.

The victim described the suspects as four black males one being heavy-set body type with a beard.
