AMENDED ORDINANCE ADDRESSES OVERWEIGHT TRUCKS TRAVELING ALONG INDIAN RIVER DRIVE

St.Lucie County, Fl  (treasurecoast.com)- Sheriff Ken Mascara informs drivers of the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners passing of an amended ordinance, which went into effect on July 5, 2022, to include weight restrictions on Indian River Drive.
“Speeding on Indian River Drive has been a real problem over the years, and the county has implemented many changes to address this issue,” said Sheriff Mascara. “While these changes have been highly effective, the amended ordinance allows us to address drivers of overweight trucks who use Indian River Drive as a thoroughfare. Those in violation of this ordinance will be cited.”
According to Sheriff Mascara, the county already had dynamic speed limit signs, traffic-calming devices, and additional stop signs in place along Indian River Drive before the amended ordinance took effect. To improve safety further, they designated parts of the drive as no passing zones by adding double yellow lines. The Sheriff’s Office also increased its presence on Indian River Drive to ensure compliance.
“This amendment defines a weight limit for trucks traveling along Indian River Drive between Citrus Avenue and the south St. Lucie County Line,” said Sheriff Mascara. “When empty, trucks cannot exceed six thousand (6,000) pounds.”
The amendment does provide some exclusions for “motor homes or recreational vehicles, delivery vehicles and school buses who have a destination on Indian River Drive in St. Lucie County.”
