Coast Guard searching for 39 people off Fort Pierce Inlet

The U.S. Coast Guard is on a rescue mission, Tuesday afternoon, to search for almost 40 people who were on a boat that capsized.

The wreck happened in severe weather, Saturday night, 45 miles east of Fort Pierce Inlet.

The Coast Guard said a good Samaritan rescued a survivor who was clinging to the boat at about 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The survivor reported he left Bimini, Bahamas, with 39 other people Saturday night and they hit severe weather, causing the boat to capsize. The man said no one was wearing life jackets.

Coast Guard air and surface asset crews are searching for people in the water at this time.

The Coast Guard said this is a “suspected human smuggling venture.”
