Duo with warrants arrested after K9 Jaxson locates fleeing passenger in the woods

Port St. Lucie, Fl (treasurecoast.com) – PSLPD Officers patrolling the SW Biltmore St area after an increase in catalytic converter thefts, located a vehicle at 12:30am this morning leaving a closed business parking lot with a large amount of scrap metal items in the bed of the pickup. Upon seeing the Officers, the vehicle quickly sped away and pulled into the parking lot of Jaycee Park. The female passenger of the vehicle then exited and ran into the woods.
K9 Officer Krecic and K9 Jaxson arrived on scene and quickly apprehended 40 year old, Amber Varney, in the woods. Amber ran because she had an active felony warrant for grand theft. The driver, 38 year old Cheryl Heitzman, initially refused to identify herself because she was driving on a suspended driver’s license and also had an active warrant for petit theft.
During the investigation, Officers located a capsule in the vehicle containing Oxycodone. Both Amber and Cheryl informed Officers that they were in the industrial part of SW Biltmore St looking for metal that they could scrap for cash.
The duo was arrested and taken to jail for their active warrants and also for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, resisting an officer without violence, and loitering and prowling. Cheryl had additional charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license suspended.
