  World Suicide Prevention Month

Fort Pierce, FL; September 26, 2017:    World Suicide Prevention Month, September, activities are increasing with proclamations being read in area jurisdictions, the Second Annual Ride to Fight Suicide revving up on the 30th, and several partner agencies coming on board along with us at Suncoast for the 3rd Annual World Suicide Prevention Symposium happening on September 29 at the Port St. Lucie Community Center at Airoso and PSL Boulevards.

Reducing suicide rates

Access to mental health services is a critical component in reducing suicide rates, particularly at a time when we are facing a national opioid epidemic. Martin Health System will continue to partner with community mental health agencies. Their goal is to help provide education, awareness and access to resources that may help prevent loss of life from suicide.” said Scott Samples, Martin Health System Director of Corporate Communications, Marketing and Business Development.  Martin Health.  Along with the Chapter 1 Foundation, 211 Helpline, Veteran’s Services from Palm Beach County and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be on hand at this morning-long event Friday.  The program is free and open to the public.  Anyone may attend for all or part of the program.

Suicide is complex

.The psychological pain that leads each of these individuals to take their lives is unimaginable. Suicide is complex.  Connectedness is crucial to individuals who may be vulnerable to suicide.

Studies have shown that social isolation can increase the risk of suicide.  Conversely, that having strong human bonds can be protective against it. Reaching out to those who have become disconnected from others and offering them support and friendship may be a life-saving act.  “Take a Minute, Save a Life” is the theme of this year’s event.
