Announcements Sept 6,2017

Here are some important numbers and websites to remember during the storm. The Martin County Emergency Operations Center has activated their citizen rumor control hotline. The number is 772-287-1652. It will be open from 8am until 6pm until Friday when it will be operational around the clock. You can also get information at Martin.fl.us/hurricane FL. The city of Port St Lucie also has a hotline. That number is 772-873-6397. There is also a website, City of PSL where information will be updated frequently. Residents of Fort Pierce can check out City of Fort Pierce  for updates.

Schools along the Treasure Coast and South Florida will be closed on Thursday and Friday. In St Lucie county, all after school activities on Wednesday are cancelled, except for the Boys and Girls Clubs and 21st Century. Students in those two afterschool programs must be picked up by 5:30. Even the high school football games have been canceled this week. Some have been rescheduled for later in the season, while some will not be made up.

Pet owners; advice to help ensure the safety of animals now and for the rest of the hurricane season. Keep animals indoors with you if you choose not to evacuate. This includes rabbits, birds, lizards, dogs, cats, or any other animals who can be taken indoors. If you evacuate, do not leave animals behind, where they could drown or be killed by the storm. Although emergency shelters sometimes turn animals away, some hotels may be willing to accept small animals in an emergency. Transport them in secure carriers and keep larger dogs leashed or harnessed, as frightening sounds and unfamiliar surroundings can cause them to bolt. Take along water and food bowls, a favorite toy, a blanket, a towel and enough food for a week. Be prepared by having your animals microchipped and putting secure, legible ID tags on them.

Pet Shelter Indian River

Indian River County has designated Liberty Magnet School at 6850 81st Street in Vero Beach as the county’s pet-friendly evacuation shelter. The Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County has accepted the responsibility of helping manage this shelter.

“In the past when a hurricane threatened, families with pets had very few choices,” observes Ilka Daniel, HSVB&IRC’s Director of Protective Services. “   When ordered to evacuate, pet owners typically would either flee the county with their pets in tow or sought refuge for themselves and their pets with friends living in non-evacuation areas.

Activating a pet-friendly shelter is a responsible alternative that enables entire families, pets and all, to safely remain together in times of disaster.

As with other evacuation shelters in the county, the pet-friendly shelter should be considered as “a shelter of last resort,” according to Daniel. We would like for you to consider other alternatives before you decide on the pet-friendly shelter.

To qualify for using the pet-friendly shelter, evacuees must meet certain requirements. First, they must reside in a mandatory evacuation area. Next, they must bring with them an animal crate large enough to comfortably accommodate bedding, a litter pan, and food/water. Finally, they are required to show proof of a current rabies vaccination and a county license for their pet, if applicable.

“Space in the pet-friendly shelter will be on a first-come-first-served basis,” says Etta LoPresti, Indian River County Emergency Management Coordinator.  Completing the registration formprior to your arrival will make the check-in process easier and more efficient.  If you have any questions, contact Ilka Daniel at www.hsvb.org or 772-571-6408.
