St. Lucie County Master Gardener Shares Fertilizing Tips May 21

Plants need important nutrients to survive and thrive. Gardeners can aid the process by adding necessary fertilizers to their landscapes and container plants. The key is knowing how and when to fertilize, and understanding the local ordinances regarding fertilizer use.

Master Gardener Michelle Peterson will discuss best practices for fertilizing gardens, with special emphasis on the nutrients daylilies require, at the next meeting of the South Florida Daylily Society on Sunday, May 21 at 2 p.m. at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, 2410 SE Westmoreland Blvd., Port St. Lucie. Meetings are held indoors in The Pavilion. All meetings of the South Florida Daylily Society are free and open to the public.

Peterson has been a certified Florida Master Gardener for more than five years. She has served as an office volunteer, been involved in many local Master Gardener events, and currently serves as President of the South Florida Daylily Society.

There is a county-wide fertilizer blackout period in St. Lucie County, including both the cities of Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, from June 1 through Sept. 30, prohibiting the use of fertilizer with Nitrogen and Phosphorus during this time.
