Multiple Fires create State of Emergency.

Governor Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in Florida because of the wildfires raging throughout the state. The Treasure Coast is one of the most threatened areas.

The Forest Service says the drought index in western portions of St. Lucie and Martin Counties, and all of Okeechobee County, is higher than anywhere else in the state.

The Florida Forest Service says yesterday there were more than 100 active wildfires burning across the state.

Since February, wildfires have swept across 68,000 acres of the state. That amount is higher than the average acreage burned over the past five years.

The dry conditions mark a sharp contrast to 2016, when an unusually wet dry season led to massive discharges out of Lake Okeechobee throughout most of the year.

Crews in Martin County last night battled a brush fire that was up to at least 50 acres in size in the area of Allapatah Road and Minute Maid Road. Authorities say that no homes were threatened.
