Martin County Changes Hurricane Evacuation Maps

Martin Co1

Martin County Fire Rescue’s Emergency Management Agency has changed the look of the hurricane storm surge evacuation maps for Martin County.

The change comes as more information on hurricane storm surge changes the way scientists can predict the size of the surge. It used to be that the predicted storm surge was based on the wind speed of the hurricane. Now the data shows that storm surge is different for each storm. A large Category 4 hurricane could have a very small storm surge while a smaller Category 1 could have a significantly larger storm surge.

The zones were previously identified as categories 1, 3, and 5, and are now identified as evacuation zones AB, CD, and E. As the area most vulnerable to storm surge zone AB is depicted in red shading, the next area, zone CD is depicted in yellow, and zone E is depicted in blue shading.
