Joseph Michael Schreiber sentenced for arson of Fort Pierce Islamic Center
Joseph Michael Schreiber, 32, was sentenced in circuit court. He will serve 30 years in prison for the September 11 arson of the Fort Pierce Islamic Center.
Schreiber was arrested on September 14, 2016. He was charged with intentionally setting the mosque on fire. Evidence showing prejudice while committing this offense therefore led the 19th Judicial State Attorney to apply the Florida hate crime enhancement provision. The charges were then also enhanced to reflect his status as a Habitual Felony Offender and Prison Release Reoffender.
“Finality like today bring the criminal justice system full circle,” said Sheriff Ken J. Mascara. “The men and women of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, along with our partners at the St. Lucie County Fire District, FBI, ATF, FDLE and Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office worked tirelessly on this case.”
