Saint Edwards School
Saint Edward’s Announces 26 AP Scholars
Saint Edward’s is having another great scholastic year with 26 AP Scholars to its credit, including three National AP Scholars. The title of National Scholar is granted to students in the
U.S. who receive an average grade of at least four or higher on eight or more of the exams, on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest, and three passing.
Nine students earned the title of AP Scholar which is granted to those students who receive grades of three or higher on three or more exams.
Four students earned the title of AP Scholar with Honor which is granted to those students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of three or higher on four or more of those exams.
Ten students earned the title of AP Scholar with Distinction which is granted to those students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of three or higher on five or more of those.
AP or advanced placement courses are offered beginning in the freshman year. Last year, 97% of the freshman who took AP Human Geography passed and 83% scored a four or higher. Saint Edward’s presently offers up to 20 AP courses.
Director of Testing Terence Mitchell stated, “We offer a wide array of AP courses and are continuing to add additional courses. We require that all students take the exams and historically, our students do quite well on the exams. As an independent school our goal is that our students will not simply pass with a score of three, but will earn scores of four and higher. As a matter of fact, we project that we will have as many as eight National Scholars next year, which is the highest honor offered by the College Board.”
In addition to the 26 AP Scholars, Saint Edward’s is pleased to report four National Merit Semifinalists (Alexandra Hendricks, Alexandra Grant, Steven Recio and Emily Packard) and three commended scholars (Diana Pechter, Freddie Rose and Nora Willett). Recio was also named Scholar by the 2007-08 National Hispanic Recognition Program.

St. Edward's
In the most competitive and difficult of years in the field of college admissions, Saint Edward’s had one of the most successful years to date. It was not just the top percentage of SES students who fared well; SES seniors from the top deciles to the bottom deciles were admitted to first rate colleges and universities.
The Class of 2008 has received 280 acceptances to date into 114 different colleges around the nation. The colleges range from large to small, public to private, rural to urban, and all choices are quality institutions. Students were accepted into the most highly selective private schools including Stanford, Dartmouth, Northwestern, University of Pennsylvania, Duke, Georgetown, Tufts, Boston College, Vanderbilt, University of Chicago, Washington University in St. Louis, and Emory, as well as top public colleges including the University of Virginia, UNC Chapel Hill, the University of Michigan, the University of Maryland, UF, and FSU. The impressive admittance is attributed to a strong academic class, effective student advocacy on the part of the college counseling office, and an increasing awareness of the quality of their college preparatory program.
During senior year in addition to looking ahead to their future, Saint Edward’s students form important relationships with first graders at the Lower School. They have a “Senior Buddy” for the year. Activities include Halloween Parade, Making Valentine’s, and letters of advice from the first graders to the seniors. Today started out with the first graders performing a play for the seniors and ended with the seniors taking a last and poignant walk down the hallways with the underclassmen cheering, high-fiving and wishing them well; they wore college t-shirts for the first time. www.steds.org
