Hurricane Irma Treasure Coast Recovery

Hurricane Irma Treasure Coast Recovery

Sept 18, 2017

Life is getting back to normal on the Treasure Coast after Hurricane Irma. The vast majority have power back.

FPL shows just over 400 customers without power still in Martin and St Lucie counties. At this point if you don’t have power, you should call FPL to report your outage.

School is also back in session. Students in St Lucie and Martin counties are back after missing nearly a week and a half of school because of Irma. The St Lucie county school district announced that they received minimum damage during the storm, and have addressed everything needed to safely re-open the schools. Indian River State College, Saint Anastasia, and John Carroll High School will also be starting back up today.

The boil water notice for the Sampson Subdivision in Lakewood Park was lifted over the weekend. The only other boil water notice was for Martin County Utilities customers on Hutchinson Island. That boil water notice was lifted last week as well.

Storm debris collection has begun throughout St Lucie and Martin counties.  Make sure to separate your debris into a vegetative pile, and a construction debris pile. Make sure to place the debris in piles right on the ground at the side of the road, making sure to keep them away from trees, mailboxes, or power poles that could get in the way.

FEMA has approved Martin and St Lucie counties for individual assistance in recovering from Irma. FEMA can help with several disaster related costs, including making repairs for your house or paying for temporary housing if needed. You should contact FEMA directly.  You can see if you qualify for FEMA assistance and apply online at Disaster Assistance dot gov. Additionally, a FEMA Disaster Recovery Center will be opening up at the Fenn Center in Fort Pierce in the next few days.
