Groundbreaking for U.S. Customs at Witham Field

Groundbreaking for U.S. Customs at Witham Field.

Yesterday saw a historic groundbreaking for a new U.S. Customs facility at Witham Field in Stuart. The facility is the first of its kind in Florida, servicing both planes and boats. The goal is to make traveling to the Bahamas more convenient for those in Martin County because now there’s no need to go through St. Lucie or Palm Beach County.

There will be a small service fee for planes and boats, but it’s expected to have a big impact bringing in nearly $500,000 a year. They estimate seeing 2,000 flights and 2,500 boats. Officials say this could rally tourism in the city.

In 2011, Martin County commissioners voted to block any tax dollars being spent on customs, so future money for the project will come from Airport Enterprise funds.
