Expert Real Estate Tips: Negotiation 101

Negotiation 101

Deals are won and lost through the art of negotiation by the parties. Many think of this as the game, but it is a game you must play in every transaction. Negotiation can save you or cost you thousands of dollars in any real estate transaction. Let me give you a few tips that can help you win or at least get a better deal.

Always counter an offer.

Many people will not even counter an offer they feel is too low. They look at it as an insult. DON’T TAKE IT PERSONAL, it is the Buyers job to get the property for the lowest price possible. It is the seller’s job to get as much as possible. When a buyer comes in at a low number in many cases they are looking for a starting point for Negotiations. Counter even if you counter at full price at least you are still in the game. Don’t let a potential Buyer just walk away. It cost them nothing to make you that offer. It cost you nothing to counter.

Always ask for a couple things you are willing to give away. When it comes down to give and take to make the deal you want a couple things in there that you don’t care about so you don’t end up giving away something that you do care about. The other side needs to get something so that they feel that they are getting a deal as well. A deal is only a deal when both sides leave the table happy!
