South Indian River Fishing Report 5/31/17

Inshore:

Things are beginning to calm down as summer arrives on the Treasure Coast. Mornings have been beautiful with winds picking up in the afternoons. Chances of afternoon rains will increase as the temperatures warm up. It’s a wonderful time of year to live here! Boats have been heading offshore on these calmer days to catch cobia, dolphin and many other species. Expect lots of boat traffic on these good weather days.

The inshore bite was a little slower last week with the rains cooling down the water lately. We have been catching a good variety of species. Snook, mackerel, jacks, ladyfish and many others have been on the catch list. Andy, Dave and Dan were here last week fishing the area. The guys caught snook, mackerel, bonito, bluefish and jacks on a somewhat slow bite for the day. Keith and Cai were out for a short trip. Cai just missed a good snook that startled her when it blasted her bait. George, Matt, Ward and Bob had a good day with mackerel, jacks, snapper and assorted other species on their adventure. With the full moon over soon, the bite will get back to normal. It was a fun week on the water!

Trout

The trout bite should be picking up soon. Look for grassy flats to find the trout. Try the DOA Deadly Combo when searching for trout on the grass flats. At first light try a top water lure as well. Redfish should be hanging around docks and mangroves. Try live bait or a DOA shrimp when fishing for reds. Snook have been around bridges, docks and the jetties. Most anglers have been using pilchards when fishing for snook this time of year. Mackerel, jacks and bonito have been coming into the river with the tides. Small shiny jigs work best for them. Fish your lures fast!

With summer warming up things around the area, it’s important to take a few minutes and slather on the sunscreen to keep from getting burned. How you take care of yourself in the sun can affect you later in life! Keep hydrated and enjoy the fishing on the Treasure Coast!

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby….it’s an ADVENTURE!!

Good Fishing and Be Safe,
